Biking

Yesterday, we bought a used scooter and bike. Abby is now big enough to ride the 12" bike we got for Hannah's b-day last year. We decided to get a 16" for Hannah so that it will last a little longer, she fits pretty well on it too.
We went to the park with the bikes yesterday but we got rained out not long after arriving.
It rained today too, but late this afternoon it had stopped and it was nice enough to go out for a while.

I was trying to keep Josh busy at the back of the driveway so he would quit trying to run into the road. He posed for a picture on his bike for a minute but wasn't really into playing with it.

He made a break for the back yard, his favorite place to be lately.
Before we could stop him, he got into the wet sandbox, his next favorite place to be.

Then he decided it was time to play tether ball. This pole was in the yard when we bought the house, so we bought the ball for it. The kids love it. Josh especially, he's really into balls right now.

Brad took Josh into the house for a bath, so I caught up with the girls who were enjoying their "new" rides. Here is Hannah coming through the "alley" between our house and the shed (Stupid place for a shed, it will be moved to the corner of the yard by next summer). A genuine smile! I think she likes it!
Abby really enjoyed riding the new scooter
But was still a little unsure about pedaling the 12" bike.
Last year before deciding on a bike for Hannah, I heard about Balance bikes from some friends. Basically they are bikes with no pedals and they are short enough that kids can bend their knees and flat foot the ground while sitting on the seat. They use their feet to move, and the point is to learn how to balance before throwing in pedaling too. I've seen videos of really tiny kids riding and balancing these bikes.
I think it's a really cool idea, but we didn't want to buy a dedicated balance bike since they are pretty pricy and can't be used as pedal bikes. Some people take the pedals off a regular bike for kids to learn that way, but the 12" bikes are too big for the girls to be able to reach the ground flat footed. Last summer I found a tiny kid's bike used for $5. I decided there was my chance to have a cheap balance bike. We cut the pedals off and super glued rubber caps to the short stubs that were left so no one would get cut by the metal. The girls didn't have much of a chance to use it last year, but Hannah has been practicing on it a lot so far this year. She's getting really good.
Anyway, that is what this video is, Hannah showing off her new balance bike skills. She's getting there. We need to take her back to the park to practice on the short hills there.

that small bike will be great to teach her how to ride. We borrowed our neighbors small bike for Kaitlyn when she was that age. That is what she felt most comfortable learning on.
Josh and Spencer both play outside and love the same things. Right now Sepncer is just into solitary play but maybe by the next time we are out there Spence will be interested in other kids and they can play ball together.
